ANB 218A—Fundamentals of Animal Behavior (Graduate) Lecture/Discussion—4 hour(s); Discussion—1 hour(s). Prerequisite(s): Consent of Instructor. Upper division undergraduate introduction to the biology of behavior, such as PSC 101, PSC 122, PSC 123, NPB 102, NPB 150, NPB 152, WFC 141, ENT 104, or ANS 105. Survey of the phenomena and theory of animal behavior from the perspectives of multiple biological disciplines, including evolution, ecology, psychology, genetics, neurobiology, endocrinology, and animal science. (Same course as PSC 218A.) Effective: 2007 Fall Quarter.

ANT 155—Primate Conservation Biology (4)

Lecture—3 hour(s); Discussion—1 hour(s). Prerequisite(s): ANT 001 or ANT 054 recommended. Study of the taxonomic, ecological and cultural diversity of Primates and how human activities impact tropical ecosystems. Emphasis on case studies and applied research methods. FYS 001 WQ Domestic Cat Cognition and Behavior (1) Seminar.

Course description (seminar):  Research into the behavior and cognitive abilities of the domestic cat (Felis catus): stress responses in cats, predation by cats on wildlife, human-cat interactions and communication. Practical applications of knowledge on feline cognition and behavior to welfare, human-animal interactions, and conservation.

FYS 001 FQ Canine Cognition:  Current understanding and application of cognitive abilities of domestic dogs (1) Seminar.  Course description (seminar): What is currently known about cognitive abilities of dogs, beginning with classic work, Scott and Fuller on canine genetics and social behaviors and B.F. Skinner on operant conditioning. Cognition and emotion by Miklósi, Horowitz. Emotions in non-human animals, and the physiological basis of the human-animal bond.
